Currently: May

It’s time for another “Currently” post! Also just a head’s up: due to my current workload and my writing goals on my WIP, I’ll only be posting every other week from now on. On my off weeks, be sure to follow me on Facebook and/or Twitter because rather than writing blog posts of my own on those days, I’ll be sharing blog posts by other writers that I’ve found interesting or helpful. 🙂

LOVING

Kelly and I at said wedding, looking about as cold (but happy) as we were.

Springtime rain! I absolutely love the rain, whether I’m inside writing while I listen to the pitter-patter of raindrops on my windows, or out for a walk with my husband under an umbrella. I don’t really like driving in it, but thanks to my whole “working from home” thing, I rarely actually have to drive anywhere. It’s pretty great.

Rain makes me feel very nostalgic. I have so many good memories during rainstorms, like the being a foolish teenager who didn’t understand how dangerous going swimming in the rain is and doing exactly that, or my sister-in-law’s beautiful wedding beneath a bowery while it poured around us. And I’m sure I’m not alone in my love for the smell of petrichor.

READING

The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher. And holy crap do I love it so very much!! The fantasy world he’s created is so fascinating, I love nearly every character (you know, except for the ones I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to hate anyway), and best of all? Talking cats! A whole cat society that’s trying to enter the peerage! Love it. I’m only halfway done though, so please no spoilers. Anyway, I highly recommend it.

WATCHING

Like so may other thirty-somethings right now, I’m watching Game of Thrones. Immediately after that, I always watch Silicon Valley. I think it’s pretty clever of HBO to have those two one after the other, because I always need a good strong dose of comedy after watching GoT. Seriously, can Ramsay Bolton be any more of an evil wanker?

LISTENING TO

The other night a group of friends and I were talking about the bands we loved about 10-15 years ago. The ones we’d listen to over and over, the ones we got sunburnt watching at the X96 Big Ass Show or Vans Warped Tour. Since then, I’ve been digging out old albums like Saturate by Breaking Benjamin and Day of the Death by Death By Stereo.

THINKING ABOUT

My current WIP. I’m making some real headway, and I’m hoping to have the first draft done sometime in mid-June. Then the long cycle of editing, beta readers, more editing, editing again, and oh did I mention editing? I’m excited though. This project has taken a long time to mature in my mind and on paper, and it feels really good to be passing so many milestones with it. It’s also just about the only way to keep my mind off querying my mystery novel, so thank goodness I’ve got it to work on and think about.

ANTICIPATING

I’m still looking forward to my trip to Orlando, but I’m now also looking forward to finishing my downstairs bathroom. It’s been in a half-remodeled state for several years and hasn’t been functional, and it’s the larger and more… uh… secluded of the two in my house, so I’m looking forward to being able to use it again. We’re just starting the process so it’s a long road head, but hey, what in my life has ever been a short road?

WISHING

That my friend Kurt was already done with his cancer treatments, and that he could be happy and healthy with all of this crap behind him. Speaking of long roads, he’s had a tough battle so far and has a lot of treatment ahead. His amazing friends and family have been doing fundraisers and charity golf tournaments to help Kurt and his wife afford the treatments; there’s currently a GoFundMe happening so if you have the means to help him fund his treatments, you can donate here.

MAKING ME HAPPY

The fact that the temperature has been so perfect for the last several weeks that we haven’t had to run either the furnace or the air conditioning! This has been a lovely season so far, and Kelly and I have been going on regular walks to get in more exercise, look at what the neighbors are doing in their yards for inspiration in our own, and talking about our days. As the segment title said, it just makes me really happy. 🙂
